Frase Alternatives — First Decide Which Frase You Are Replacing

Frase's own pricing page describes a loop, not just an editor: every plan researches topics, drafts in your voice, publishes to your CMS on your approval, audits existing pages, and rewrites pages that start losing rank.

What Is Frase Now, and Which Job Did You Hire It For?

Frase's own pricing page describes a loop, not just an editor: every plan researches topics, drafts in your voice, publishes to your CMS on your approval, audits existing pages, and rewrites pages that start losing rank. That is a different product from the brief-and-optimization tool most people mean when they search for alternatives.

  • Starter is $49/month billed monthly, or $39/month billed yearly — 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month (checked 24 August 2026).
  • Professional is $129/month ($103 yearly) with 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages; Scale is $299/month ($239 yearly) with 5 seats, 10 domains and 100 articles.
  • AI-visibility tracking is tiered by model: Starter watches ChatGPT and Google AI, Professional adds Perplexity, and Claude and Gemini only arrive at Scale.
  • Content Guard is the decay watcher — 10 pages on Starter, 75 on Professional, 300 on Scale. When a watched page loses rank, Frase drafts the revision and republishes once you approve.
  • Starter stops at its limits rather than billing overages; on higher tiers pay-as-you-go exists but is off by default.

So the first question is not "what else scores content." It is which of those two jobs — the editor or the loop — you were actually paying for. The budget end of the wider category is mapped in our guide to cheap SEO tools.

Why It Matters Which Frase You Are Replacing

Most shortlists treat Frase as an optimization editor and line it up against other editors. That answers half the question, because the two jobs have different replacement markets.

If you used Frase for briefs, scores and SERP research, the comparables are the optimization tools: NeuronWriter from $23/month, Scalenut from $59, Surfer from $59 on its Discovery tier (the Standard tier most teams compare is $119), Clearscope from $129. If you used it as a hands-off research-draft-publish pipeline with decay repair, the comparables are the automated publishing bundles — Outrank, Autoblogging.ai, BabyLoveGrowth — which we have compared separately.

Picking from the wrong column is the expensive mistake. An editor cannot replace the loop no matter how good its scoring is, and paying loop prices when you only ever used the editor means funding features you never switch on.

How Frase Alternatives Actually Differ in Real Content Workflows

Split the candidates by job, then by billing term — both splits change the ranking.

If You Want the Editor Job Only

NeuronWriter starts at $23/month (Bronze, 25 content analyses); its Gold tier at $69 adds Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations. Surfer's Discovery tier is $59/month for 10 documents; its Standard, at $119/month billed monthly or $99/month billed yearly, covers 30 documents a month with AI-prompt tracking refreshed weekly, and the cannibalization report requires Pro at $219/month. Clearscope prices Essentials at $129/month with unlimited users and projects, which suits teams where many people touch few pages.

If You Want the Loop Job

Scalenut is the halfway house: its Plus tier at $89/month includes auto-publishing to WordPress and Shopify alongside optimization, and its annual promotion reprices Starter at $24/month with doubled limits — a limited offer, so verify it is still running before you budget on it. For the full hands-off pipeline, the bundle category starts at $19/month with Autoblogging.ai and runs through Outrank at $99 and BabyLoveGrowth at a promotional $99 (list price $247, billed monthly); the trade-offs there are mapped in our outrank alternatives comparison and our babylovegrowth alternatives breakdown.

Where We Are Not an Alternative

We do not research topics, draft articles, publish them, or rewrite decaying pages, so nothing on our side replaces either job. Our SEO agent runs a bounded crawl of discoverable same-origin static HTML and its page states plainly that it "does not edit a site, create a pull request, deploy, save a project run, or prove search-engine traffic impact." It answers a narrower question — whether what you already published holds together — which is worth knowing before you pay any tool to produce more of it. What that scope deliberately excludes is the subject of our piece on agentic seo.

Common Misreadings When Comparing These Tools

Four patterns distort Frase comparisons, and all four are visible on the vendors' own pages:

  1. Reading annual-equivalent prices as monthly prices. Surfer's pricing page defaults to billed-yearly rates — the $99 Standard figure becomes $119 when you flip the toggle to monthly billing. Frase has the same two-rate structure ($39 yearly versus $49 monthly). A comparison table without a billing-term column is wrong before it starts.
  2. Taking promotional annual rates as list prices. Scalenut's $24/$36/$80 annual tiers are labelled a 60%-off limited offer with doubled limits, against regular monthly rates of $59/$89/$199. Quote the promo as the price and your budget roughly two-and-a-half-times when the offer ends.
  3. Treating AI-visibility tracking as a differentiator. As of the pricing pages checked on 24 August 2026, every tool in this comparison sells some form of it. The real differences are which models are watched (Frase gates Claude and Gemini behind its $299 tier; Clearscope tracks prompts on ChatGPT and Gemini), how often the data refreshes (Surfer Standard refreshes weekly, Pro daily), and how many prompts you get.
  4. Comparing quotas across different units. Surfer's yearly view advertises 360 documents — that is a year's allowance, 30 a month. NeuronWriter counts content analyses, not published articles. Frase counts articles and audit pages separately. Normalize to a monthly figure in one unit before comparing anything.

How to Evaluate a Frase Alternative

Three questions settle the shortlist, in order:

  1. Which Frase feature would you miss first? If it is the document scores, you are shopping for an editor and the $23–$129 column applies. If it is articles appearing in your CMS without you touching them, you are shopping for a loop and the editor column is a false economy.
  2. What does the billing toggle do to the price? Check every candidate's page in monthly mode and yearly mode, and note which yearly rates are promotions. The spread on this shortlist runs from roughly 17% to 60% — and Clearscope shows no yearly rate at all.
  3. Which AI models does the visibility tracking actually watch, and how often? The feature name is uniform; the coverage is not. Match it against where your audience actually asks questions.

If the honest answer to the first question is "the scores," the cheapest serious candidate costs $23 a month.

How to Run a Two-Week Trial Step by Step

  1. Run the trials in parallel — Frase gives 7 days without a card, Scalenut lists a 7-day trial, Clearscope gives 14 days, and NeuronWriter runs 7 days on Gold-tier terms with a 30-day first-purchase refund window. Surfer's checkout buttons say "Start for Free," but its pricing page states no trial terms — confirm before entering a card.
  2. Score the same three drafts in each editor and note where the recommendations disagree — disagreement tells you which tool's model matches your niche.
  3. If you are testing the loop, publish to a staging site first and count the editing minutes before you would let each piece go live under your brand.
  4. Check the AI-visibility numbers against a brand you already know, because citation tracking is easy to ship and hard to verify.
  5. Audit what you already have before paying to produce more. Run our SEO agent over the site — it reports on metadata, heading structure and structured data for pages that already exist, which is the base any of these tools would build on. Reading your own Search Console data first, as covered in the pillar on reading your own Search Console data, tells you whether content volume is even your constraint.

Common Questions About Frase Alternatives

What is the cheapest Frase alternative?

NeuronWriter at $23/month (Bronze, monthly billing) for the editor job. For the loop job, Autoblogging.ai enters at $19/month, though it is a different category of product.

Is Surfer a direct replacement for Frase?

For the editor job, broadly — documents, scores, prompt tracking. Its pricing page describes integrations that move drafts to WordPress, Google Docs and Contentful; it does not describe an approval-gated publish-and-repair loop, so match that half of Frase against what any candidate's own page actually commits to.

Does Frase still have a cheap solo plan?

The current entry point is Starter at $49/month, or $39/month billed yearly, scoped to 1 seat and 1 site. It stops at its monthly limits rather than billing overages, which makes the floor price predictable.

Which alternatives publish content automatically?

On the pages checked, Scalenut lists auto-publish to WordPress and Shopify from its $89 Plus tier, and the bundle category — Outrank, Autoblogging.ai, BabyLoveGrowth — publishes as its core function. Frase itself publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or hosts on FraseCMS.

Is there a free Frase alternative?

Most tools here list trial terms — Frase 7 days without a card, Clearscope 14 days — and Frase bundles a $0 FraseCMS hosting tier with its plans, but none of the five editors lists a permanently free plan on its pricing page, and Surfer's page states no trial terms at all. Treat "free" as "free to evaluate."

Every tool now advertises AI visibility — does it matter which I pick?

The label is uniform; the scope is not. Which models are watched, how many prompts, and refresh frequency vary by hundreds of dollars a month across these tiers. Verify what a tracker can actually see against a brand you know before paying for it.

Do I need any of these if I only need an audit?

If the job is checking pages you already published, that is what our agent does — bounded crawl, no generation, and its report only claims Search Console data for a property you have connected. It requires a verified sign-in and does not replace any editor or loop above.

Take Action

Before you replace Frase, find out which of its two jobs was earning the fee. Run our SEO agent over your site — Google sign-in requests identity only, and the report covers what is already published: metadata, heading structure, and JSON-LD structured data. If the pages you already have are structurally sound, you are shopping for an editor. If they are thin, unlinked, or structurally broken, adding volume will not fix that — a loop scales whatever base it starts from.
