Surfer SEO Alternatives — Surfer Sells Prompt Tracking Two Ways, and the Cheaper One Is Not the One You Are Quoting

Surfer sells prompt tracking two ways: bundled into its content plans, and as a standalone AI Search Analytics product — and the standalone one is cheaper for more prompts.

What Is Surfer SEO Selling, and What Does It Charge for AI-Visibility Tracking?

Surfer sells prompt tracking two ways: bundled into its content plans, and as a standalone AI Search Analytics product — and the standalone one is cheaper for more prompts. Its $95 standalone plan tracks 50 prompts; its $119 Standard content plan tracks 25 (checked 26 August 2026).

  • The content plans run Discovery $59/month ($49 billed yearly) with no prompt tracking listed, Standard $119 ($99) with 25 prompts refreshed weekly and tracked on ChatGPT only, Pro $219 ($182) with 50 refreshed daily across all models, and Peace of Mind $359 ($299) with 100 daily.
  • The standalone plan runs $95/month ($82 yearly) for 50 prompts, $185 ($158) for 100, $365 ($308) for 200, all refreshed daily, with an unlimited tier above that quoted on request rather than listed.
  • Per prompt that works out to $4.76 inside Standard against $1.85 on the 100-prompt standalone.
  • Some of that gap is an ordinary volume curve, so compare at matched volumes: 50 prompts cost $4.38 bundled versus $1.90 standalone, and 100 cost $3.59 versus $1.85 — roughly two times either way.
  • Its pricing page opens on the annual view, and the document allowance is displayed as a yearly figure (360 documents) that works out to 30 a month.

So the first question is not "what replaces Surfer." It is which Surfer you are replacing — and if the answer is the tracking, you have been pricing it against the wrong plan. The wider budget market is mapped in our guide to cheap SEO tools.

Why It Matters Which Surfer Product You Are Pricing Against

Shoppers comparing Surfer SEO alternatives compare the content plans, because those are the plans the page leads with. If prompt tracking is the reason you are shopping, that comparison starts from Surfer's most expensive version of the feature.

The gap is not subtle. Standard at $119 tracks 25 prompts weekly, on ChatGPT only. The standalone plan at $95 tracks 50 daily across what its card calls key LLM models — twenty-four dollars less for twice the prompts, a faster refresh and wider coverage. If you bought Standard mainly for AI-answer tracking, the standalone plan gives you more prompts for less money.

The bundled premium buys something real, and it is worth naming what: the content plans carry the editor, the document allowance, optimization, collaboration and the rest of the platform. If you use those, the bundle is the point. If you do not, you are paying editor prices for a tracker.

How Surfer SEO Alternatives Actually Differ in Real Workflows

Sort by which of the two jobs you are replacing, then compare like against like.

If You Are Replacing the Tracking

Benchmark against Surfer's standalone rate of $1.85 per prompt, not the $4.76 implied by Standard.

Against that honest baseline, Frase still undercuts it at $0.98 on its $49 Starter and $0.60 on Scale, and Clearscope Business comes in at $1.33. Scalenut Starter does not — $59 for 10 prompts is $5.90 each. The full per-prompt table is in our scalenut alternatives comparison.

If You Are Replacing the Content Editor

Surfer's own entry point is Discovery at $59, which lists no prompt tracking, so the editor comparison is a clean one: NeuronWriter from $23, Scalenut from $59, Clearscope from $129, Frase from $49 with 10 articles and 50 audit pages. What Surfer's plans count is documents — 30 a month on Standard and Pro, unlimited under a fair-use policy on Peace of Mind.

If Refresh Cadence Is the Thing You Need

This is the axis most comparisons skip. Standard refreshes its 25 prompts weekly; Pro and Peace of Mind refresh daily, as do all the standalone tiers. Scalenut's tiers all list weekly refresh, with daily available as an upgrade its FAQ mentions without pricing; Frase's AI Visibility row describes daily monitoring and alerts at $0.98 per prompt. A weekly number and a daily number are different measurements, so match cadence to how fast you would actually act.

Where We Are Not an Alternative

We do not write, optimize, or track prompts in any AI engine, so nothing on our side replaces either Surfer product. Our SEO agent runs a bounded crawl of discoverable same-origin static HTML, and its page states plainly that it "does not edit a site, create a pull request, deploy, save a project run, or prove search-engine traffic impact." Its Google sign-in "requests identity only, not Gmail mailbox or Search Console access."

Common Misreadings When Comparing These Tools

  1. Pricing the bundled tracker as if it were the only one. Surfer's own standalone plan is roughly two times cheaper per prompt at matched volumes. Any comparison that uses $119 as Surfer's tracking price overstates it — including comparisons that conclude a competitor is cheaper.
  2. Reading the annual rate as the monthly rate. The page opens on the billed-yearly view, so $99, $182 and $299 are the annual-commitment figures; month-to-month is $119, $219 and $359. The prices in this article are monthly unless stated.
  3. Reading 360 documents as a monthly allowance. That is the yearly figure on the annual view; the monthly view shows 30. Same allowance, two framings, and the larger one is the one you see first.
  4. Treating Discovery as an entry point for tracking. Surfer's $59 tier lists no prompt tracking at all, so the cheapest Surfer plan that tracks anything is Standard at $119 — or the standalone at $95, which is cheaper still.

How to Evaluate a Surfer SEO Alternative

Three questions, in order:

  1. Which Surfer are you leaving — the editor or the tracker? If it is the tracker, reprice Surfer at its standalone rate before you shortlist anyone, or you will pick a "cheaper" alternative that is not.
  2. Do you need daily refresh? Surfer gates daily behind Pro at $219 in the bundle, while the standalone plans refresh daily from $95. Scalenut lists weekly throughout. Match cadence to how fast you would act.
  3. How many documents do you actually produce? Standard and Pro both cap at 30 a month (Discovery lists 10), so the Standard-to-Pro jump buys prompts, daily cadence, full model coverage and features like the cannibalization report — not document volume.

If the honest answer to the first question is "the editor," the tracking comparison is noise and the $23 to $129 editor column is where to look.

How to Run a Two-Week Trial Step by Step

  1. Price Surfer twice before you start — once as a content plan, once as the standalone analytics plan — so you know which number you are trying to beat.
  2. Track the same prompt list in two tools for the full window, and note not just what they report but how often they refresh it.
  3. Check a citation you can independently confirm in each tool, so you are comparing how each represents a result you already know rather than comparing dashboards.
  4. Count documents you would actually publish, not documents you could generate. Surfer's 30-a-month cap on Standard and Pro is the constraint that bites first for most teams.
  5. Audit what the tracking will be measuring. Run our SEO agent over the site — it needs a verified sign-in and a few product profile fields, then reports on metadata, heading structure and JSON-LD conditions for pages already live. The Search Console side is covered in the pillar on reading your own Search Console data.

Common Questions About Surfer SEO Alternatives

What is the cheapest Surfer SEO alternative?

For prompt tracking bought as part of a plan, Frase at $0.98 per prompt on its $49 Starter, dropping to $0.60 at Scale — the cheapest all-in rate among the plans compared here. NeuronWriter's add-on blocks price prompts lower still at $0.90, but they attach to a base plan rather than standing alone. For the content editor, NeuronWriter at $23.

Is Surfer's standalone analytics plan a good deal?

Against Surfer's own bundled rate, clearly — $95 for 50 daily-refreshed prompts beats $119 for 25 weekly ones. Against the market it is mid-pack: Frase and Clearscope Business both price lower per prompt.

Why does Surfer look more expensive than it is?

Because the plan most people quote is a content plan with tracking attached, not a tracking product. Quote the standalone rate when the subject is tracking, and the content rate when the subject is documents.

Does Surfer have a free trial?

Its pricing page shows "Start for Free" buttons but states no trial length or refund terms, so confirm at checkout rather than assuming a window.

What about the number of documents?

Discovery lists 10 a month, Standard and Pro both list 30 — displayed as 120 and 360 on the annual view. Peace of Mind lists unlimited. If document volume is your constraint, the jump from Standard to Pro does not address it.

Which alternative tracks the most AI models?

Surfer's compare table lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overview and Gemini — but only Pro and above track prompts across all of them, since Standard's 25 are ChatGPT-only. Frase reaches ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini at its Scale tier. Match the list against where your buyers actually ask.

Do I need any of these if I only want to know whether my pages are sound?

No. That is an audit rather than a subscription, and it is the job our agent does — no generation, no tracking, no editor.

Take Action

Before you replace Surfer, price the half you are actually replacing — and check the state of the pages any of these tools would be working on. Run our SEO agent over your site — Google sign-in requests identity only, and after a few product profile fields the report covers metadata, heading structure, and JSON-LD conditions on what is already published. An optimizer scores a draft; this tells you what shape the live pages are in.
