Viral Coefficient

Viral Coefficient is the number of new users that each existing user generates on average through invitations or sharing.

The viral coefficient (K-factor) quantifies how effectively a product spreads through user-to-user sharing. It is calculated as the number of invitations sent per user multiplied by the conversion rate of those invitations. A K-factor above 1.0 means each user brings in more than one new user, creating exponential growth.

True virality above 1.0 is rare and usually unsustainable long-term. Most successful products achieve a K-factor between 0.3 and 0.7, which meaningfully reduces customer acquisition cost even without achieving self-sustaining viral growth.

GenGrowth measures the viral coefficient of content by tracking how often visitors share articles, glossary pages, and tools with their networks. The platform identifies which content formats and topics have the highest sharing propensity and recommends producing more of what spreads naturally.
