  • It carries a name and dates. A start date, a completion date, and a label Google uses consistently afterwards.
  • It appears on the incident history. The Google Search Status Dashboard, checked on 17 August 2026, records no ranking, indexing or crawling incident for either August or July.
  • It is not the same thing as volatility. Trackers measure daily SERP change; Google confirms changes to its systems. Those are different categories.
  • The 2026 confirmed record runs to five entries. A February Discover core update (5–27 February, Google's first Discover-only announced update), a March spam update (24–25 March), the March core update (27 March – 8 April), the May core update (21 May – 2 June), and the June spam update (24–26 June). Everything after 26 June is unconfirmed movement.

One caveat the definition itself carries: Google ships thousands of unannounced ranking changes a year, so "no confirmed update" never means "nothing changed." It only means you have no external event to point at — which is exactly when it pays to read your own data properly, the discipline covered in the pillar on reading your own Search Console data. Every figure below is a dated snapshot of a specific, time-bound event rather than a baseline, and should be expected to decay as the volatility resolves.

Why It Matters That Google Has Confirmed Nothing

When an update is confirmed, you know an external cause exists and waiting out the rollout is defensible. When nothing is confirmed, you have no such licence — and no way to tell an external cause from your own instrumentation until you check.

August was not one event. Trackers flagged elevated movement around 1–3 August, again on 5–6 August, and again on 12–13 August. Digital Applied's roundup of that last window credits Search Engine Roundtable with the running count — the sixth volatility window since the June spam update, none of them confirmed by Google — and logs it across fourteen named trackers including Semrush Sensor, Mozcast, Sistrix, Algoroo, AccuRanker and AWR.

We opened our own Search Console during that stretch expecting to find damage. What we found instead was five ways we had been misreading our own numbers. Two were real site-side problems. Three were mistakes in how we were reading the data — and those were the expensive ones, because they were shaping decisions.

How Unconfirmed Volatility Plays Out in Real Search Console Data

Figures below come from a rolling seven-day window, 4–10 August 2026, compared against the preceding seven days. That is a rolling comparison, which the checklist further down tells you not to use — so treat these as directional, and note that we state the sample sizes precisely because they are small enough to matter.

Retired URLs Were Still Being Credited With Most of Our Impressions

We had completed a URL migration. For the 162 URLs in that migration set we tested six configuration points — the redirects are 308s rather than 301s because that is our framework's default, and Google treats the two identically — and every one was correct:

  1. Permanent redirects landing directly on their destination, no chained hops.
  2. No robots.txt block.
  3. No stale entries in the main sitemap.
  4. No internal links still pointing at the old paths.
  5. Destination URLs self-canonicalising.
  6. No leftover hreflang.

Even so, 60.8% of our impressions were still attributed to retired paths — 1,327 impressions in absolute terms. Nothing was misconfigured in that set. Google was still selecting the retired URLs as canonical, which means the redirect had not yet consolidated, and the crawl path is what drives that: once the sitemap and internal links stop pointing at old URLs, Googlebot revisits them only on its own schedule.

What helped was a separate temporary sitemap listing those 162 retired URLs, submitted on its own. Google's site-move guidance recommends exactly this and warns that Search Console will flag the URLs in it as redirecting — expected, not a fault. Google frames six months as a floor rather than a ceiling here, and separately advises keeping the redirects themselves for at least a year.

A Separate Set of Old URLs Was Redirecting Into 404s

The clean migration set was not the whole picture. A second group of legacy URLs, never part of that migration and therefore never covered by those six checks, was redirecting into pages that no longer existed — seven URLs returning a permanent redirect into a 404.

Those seven were collecting AI-feature impressions. Search Console's generative AI reporting recorded 186 impressions across our pages between 18 May and 12 August 2026, and 51 of them — 27% — landed on those seven broken URLs. 43 of the 51 were a single URL, so this is really one page's problem wearing a group's clothing.

Two limits on that number, both worth stating: the report launched on 3 June 2026 with data beginning 18 May and no historical backfill, so there is no earlier baseline to compare against and any "growth" across those weeks is partly the report filling in. And it reports impressions, not clicks — so the traffic actually lost here cannot be measured from Search Console at all.

We Were Measuring Against a Benchmark That Kept Moving

At one point we concluded our click-through rate at a given position was roughly 25 times below normal, and we wrote that down. The fixed 2% figure we compared against predates AI Overviews.

The correction is not that the benchmark got lower — it is that it has not held still. Seer Interactive has tracked the same measure three times:

  1. January 2024 – January 2025: organic CTR on queries showing an AI Overview fell from 1.41% to 0.64%, across about 10,000 top-20 informational keywords.
  2. December 2025: a floor of 1.3%.
  3. February 2026: recovered to 2.36%, against 3.82% for queries with no AI Overview.

A number that fell by more than half and then rose by roughly 85% inside sixteen months cannot be pinned to a slide. Our 25× conclusion was wrong, but note what it was wrong against: a mixed-position aggregate, used to correct a single-position comparison. Any replacement figure has to match the position and the period you are actually measuring, or it will be wrong again within a year.

Our Site-Wide CTR Was a Junk Number Built on Single-Digit Clicks

Site-wide CTR read 0.37%. But 66.7% of our impressions came from pages whose average position sits past 20, where clicks are not realistically available. Filtered to pages averaging 20 or better, CTR was 1.03%.

Here is the part that matters more than either figure. Across roughly 2,180 impressions in that week, a 0.37% site-wide rate is about eight clicks in total. Quoting two decimal places off eight clicks is false precision, and the same applies to the encouraging number sitting next to it — our top-six CTR of 5.54% against the 3.4% we track for that band is a real 63% gap, but it rests on a handful of clicks and cannot carry a decision on its own.

The bucket is also leakier than it looks: page-level average position is itself an impression-weighted average across queries, so a page averaging 25 can serve plenty of impressions at position 8. Splitting by query and page, not by page alone, is what makes the ≤20 bucket mean anything.

A Share That Fell While the Absolute Number Rose

The share of impressions going to our retired paths fell from 68.9% to 60.8%, which looks like recovery.

The absolute impressions went from 1,302 to 1,327 — up, not down. Reverse the shares and the reason is plain: total impressions went from about 1,890 to about 2,180 across the two windows, so the denominator grew roughly 15% while the retired URLs gave up nothing. Our traffic was not falling during the week the trackers lit up; the thing we were worried about was a share, and the share was lying.

Watch the percentage alone and two weeks later you will report that the fix is working.

Common Misreadings That Look Like an Algorithm Hit

Five patterns account for most false attributions during an unconfirmed spike:

  1. The last two or three days of your range are incomplete. Search Console data lags by roughly two to three days, so ending a comparison on today manufactures a drop that fills back in later. This is the single most common false alarm we see.
  2. Rankings held but traffic fell. That points at the SERP, not your rankings — an AI Overview, a bigger feature block, more ads above the fold. Compare impressions against clicks for the same queries before touching the page.
  3. One tracker lit up. Composites disagree constantly: the 12–13 August window read 5.3 out of 10 on WireBoard, then 3.9 on a partial-day reading. Note too that trackers run de-personalised, location-fixed queries, so what they capture is feature churn and index refreshes, not personalisation.
  4. Weekday and holiday mix. B2B query demand swings hard across weekends, so two windows with different weekday mixes can fake a large fall on their own.
  5. Everything fell at once. Usually a tracking or reporting fault — a broken tag, a property switch, a Discover collapse hidden in a summed view. Not always, though: core updates are site-level signal changes and can land evenly too.

How to Evaluate Whether the Drop Is Yours or Google's

Three questions separate the two, asked in this order:

  1. Is the window itself sound? Cut the last three days for reporting lag, match the weekday mix, and confirm you are not comparing a rolling window against the one before it. A surprising share of drops end here.
  2. Is the fall concentrated or even? A fall confined to one template, directory or language path is yours. One spread evenly is consistent with a site-level signal change — including a core update — so it narrows the field rather than settling it.
  3. Did positions move, or only impressions? Stable average position with falling impressions suggests lost eligibility rather than lost ranking, but it is not proof: average position covers only queries where you appeared, so dropping out of a long tail entirely can leave it flat or improved. Check query-level counts and search demand first.

If all three point outward, waiting is defensible. If any one points inward, the fix is yours and no rollout will deliver it.

How to Run the Check Step by Step

  1. Export the query and page tables from Search Console for the affected window and the same weekdays a month earlier. Trim the most recent three days from both. Note that the UI caps exports at 1,000 rows — past that you need the API or the BigQuery bulk export.
  2. Split pages into groups — template, directory, language path — and compute impressions and clicks per group. Keep Discover separate from Search; a Discover collapse looks identical to a Search collapse once they are summed.
  3. Drop rows with an average position worse than 20 in the export, not in the Search Console interface — position is a metric there, not a dimension, so it cannot be filtered in the UI at all.
  4. Check the retired-URL bucket in absolute terms, not as a share of the total.
  5. Only then compare against tracker dates. External causes are the residual, not the first hypothesis.

Steps one through three all start from the same export. Investigate a sudden drop in organic traffic with your own data runs them against your Search Console in one pass.

Was there a Google core update in August 2026?

No confirmed one — the Search Status Dashboard shows no ranking incident for August. Unannounced changes cannot be ruled out; they are simply not something you can point at.
